Haydn Symphony no. 92 "Oxford"
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor
Beethoven Symphony no. 4
As part of the celebrations to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the Sheldonian the English Chamber Orchestra performs Haydn's "Oxford" Symphony in the glorious setting for which it was conceived. This symphony was Haydn's ingenious way to thank the University of Oxford for conferring an honorary doctorate to him in 1791. The Orchestra's own Leader and supreme virtuoso, Stephanie Gonley, takes centre stage for one of the greatest violin concertos ever written - Mendelssohn's profoundly moving E minor concerto. "Such must be the song ot the Archangel Michael" said Berlioz about the Adagio of Beethoven's Fourth, whose electrifying outbursts of Beethovenian Lebensfreude will round off this spectacular occasion.
